The exhibition is titled The Plaintive Tense, a sentence once used in a 1990’s drawing by Tim Ayres. The word plaintive, a close cousin to the words melancholia and sorrow, describes a sensation of sadness or loss; a tone of voice, gesture or image that carries a sense of longing or grief.
