Sounds from the group

Abstract

‘Sounds from the group’ is a collection of individual ‘own’ sounds made by children from Group 7 (ages 10-11 years). The sounds were chosen and recorded by the children themselves with a SONY TCM-16 tape-recorder.

Each child has two different sounds. The first sound is ‘outside’ and sits on the ear’s auricle. The second sound is ‘inside’ and belongs with the auditory canal. The sounds from outside are sounds that each child associates with home. The inner sound represents the feeling summoned by the first sound.

The CD-ROM is composed from the 31 pairs of ears of all the children in the group, producing 62 sounds. All 62 sounds are played together using a computer keyboard as an instrument, leading to a true cacophony of everday sounds. A cacophony which in turn becomes a new experience, and could even lead to a secret language.
